A Fetus and Infant Developmental Scenario: Self-organization of Goal-directed Behaviors Based on Sensory Constraints

چکیده
To gain a synthetic understanding of the emergence of babies’ goal-directed behaviors that are important for early development, we constructed an early developmental scenario for self-organization of these behaviors. This scenario is guided by a principle of sensorimotor integration based on sensory constraints. We constructed a neural model to represent our proposed scenario with simplified but essential and realistic biological features. To test this early developmental scenario, we performed simulations with musculoskeletal body models. In a series of experiments we found that sensory constraints triggered two important developmental transitions. First, in a fetus model, the non-uniform distribution of tactile sensors generated hand-face contact behaviors, as a result of the self-organizing process. Second, in an infant model, the limitation of visual field produced hand regard behaviors, also in a self-organizing manner. Our results suggest that sensory constraints may drive goal-directed behaviors and consequently trigger human early development in an embodied and self-organized manner.

Introduction: Diabetes is one of the common chronic diseases in modern societies and self-care behaviors consider as one of the most important factors in controlling this disease. Regarding the impact of psychological factors on adherence to self-care behaviors, the current study aimed to predict self-care behaviors, based on goal setting skill and perceived stress of patients with type 2 diabe...

متن کاملDevelopmental Dynamics of RNNPB: New Insight about Infant Action Development
Developmental studies have suggested that infants’ action is goal-directed. When imitating an action, younger infants tend to reproduce the goal while ignoring the means (i.e., the movement to achieve the goal) whereas older infants can imitate both. We suggest that the developmental dynamics of a Recurrent Neural Network with Parametric Bias (RNNPB) may explain the mechanism of infant developm...
متن کاملMultimodal sex-related differences in infant and in infant-directed maternal behaviors during months three through twelve of development.
Using the concepts of sensory and affective experience, this work relates the concepts of socialization and cognitive development to the embodiment of gender in the human infant. Evidence obtained from biweekly observations from 30 children and their mothers observed from age 3 months to age 12 months revealed measurable sex-related differences in how mothers handle and touch their infants. Thi...
